The problem we're solving:
Uganda faces a dual crisis of plastic pollution and energy poverty. Over 600 tons of plastic waste are generated daily, much of it burned or dumped in water bodies, causing severe environmental and health hazards. At the same time, 80% of households rely on charcoal or firewood for cooking, leading to deforestation, indoor air pollution, and respiratory illnesses, especially among women and children. Clean cooking alternatives are either too expensive or inaccessible for low-income communities. This intersection of waste mismanagement and lack of affordable energy exacerbates poverty, climate vulnerability, and public health issues. Kyuka Ventures addresses this by converting plastic waste into clean, affordable cooking gas using our patented Soot-Free Reactive Extraction Technology, while also providing micro health insurance through our “Waste Insure” model. Our innovation offers a circular, inclusive solution to three major problems: pollution, energy access, and healthcare affordability.
Our solution:
Kyuka Ventures addresses the dual challenges of plastic pollution and energy poverty in Uganda by transforming plastic waste into clean LPG using its patent-pending "Soot Free Reactive Extraction Technology" (SFRET). This technology processes 150 tonnes of plastic waste daily, preventing 1800 metric tons of plastic from being incinerated or landfilled annually. By providing LPG at $1.03 per liter on a pay-as-you-cook model, Kyuka Ventures ensures affordability for slum dwellers while replacing environmentally harmful fuels like charcoal and firewood, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 91%.
The company sources plastic from 150 marginalized women collectors and youth, paying 500 Uganda shillings per kilogram, creating income opportunities for vulnerable groups. Kyuka Ventures also provides "Waste Insure," an innovative health insurance scheme allowing households to pay for medical services with plastic waste. The solution directly impacts public health, aiming to reduce child mortality by 15% and maternal deaths due to postpartum bleeding by 25%. By 2030, Kyuka Ventures targets supplying clean fuel to 100,000 households, saving forests by 25%, mitigating climate change by up to 85%, and creating 1,000 green jobs. This holistic approach delivers economic, social, and environmental benefits, addressing critical gaps in waste management and clean energy access.
