The problem we're solving:
Across Africa, inadequate cold storage is crippling livelihoods and threatening health. Smallholder farmers lose up to 45% of fruits and vegetables post-harvest due to heat and poor storage, costing billions annually. Meat and fish vendors face spoilage rates exceeding 30% daily, forcing price drops or waste. Eateries and ice cream vendors struggle with unreliable power, leading to product loss, reduced sales, and disappointed customers. In clinics and health centers, over 25% of vaccines lose potency because cold chain requirements aren’t met, endangering lives. With over 600 million Africans lacking access to reliable electricity, perishable goods are at constant risk. This leads to reduced farmer income, food insecurity, health crises, and environmental waste. The absence of affordable, mobile, and sustainable refrigeration locks millions in a cycle of loss. Solving this isn’t just about storage, it’s about protecting livelihoods, reducing hunger, and safeguarding public health across the continent.
Our solution:
Koovix–Bi is a modular, phone-operated refrigeration system mounted on a bicycle, designed for off-grid or low-power regions, using a low-energy compressor powered by a pedal-charged, solar-augmented battery. It offers up to 10 hours of cooling and 12 hours of pico home lighting with 3 watts bulb, with IoT-enabled lease-to-own financing. Tailored for smallholder farmers, meat, fish and fruit vendors, health centers and rural clinics, it addresses cold chain gaps and energy scarcity with portability, durability, and eco-conscious design.
