Dr. Matthew L. Scullin is the Founder & CEO of Alphabet Energy, Inc., and a visionary in the field of thermoelectrics. Matt founded Alphabet Energy in 2009 to address the enormous technology opportunity that is sub-megawatt power generation—including waste-heat recovery. At Alphabet, he is leading the creation of a platform, solid-state thermoelectric power generation technology that can be deployed into heat sources ranging from engine and furnace exhaust to the human body. Alphabet’s first product is a solution for diesel fuel savings for remote mining and oil & gas sites. While at Alphabet, Matt has formed major industrial partnerships and has raised over $30 million in funding from investors including TPG and Encana while building the first customer-focused thermoelectrics company.
Matt was Forbes 30 Under 30 in 2012 and showed work titled “Rules of Six” in the show “Design and the Elastic Mind” at the MoMA in NYC in 2008. He formerly worked in venture capital at X/Seed Capital Management, and at General Motors R&D and IBM 300MM. Matt holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Materials Science from UC Berkeley where he was advised by Arun Majumdar, the first head of ARPA-E. Prior to that Matt graduated from the Engineering school at the University of Pennsylvania Magna Cum Laude, where he received the R.M. Brick Award in Materials Science.
