Startup Business Development at Amazon Web Services

Startupbootcamp FinTech New York Mentor

Derek is an NYC-based entrepreneur, angel investor, and member of Amazon Web Service’s startup team, where he helps early-stage startups succeed. Most recently, he founded and piloted an app-based shuttle bus network on Long Island called the Hampton Hopper, which uses an iPhone app (in place of a bus schedule) to give riders information about bus locations, time until arrival at the nearest stop, and details about that nearest stop.

Before that, Derek attended business school at the University of Pennsylvania (Wharton) where he experimented with several startup ideas (including Real Food Works). He was also a founding member of First Round Capital’s Dorm Room Fund, where he led investments in three companies. Through Dorm Room Fund and other roles, such as leading the Penn Founders’ Club, he has advised early-stage startup companies for over ten years.

Previously, Derek founded an online retailer, TigerGPS, which he bootstrapped from his college dorm room to become a $20 million business that he later sold to BrandShop LLC. The company was a regular member of Internet Retailer’s list of largest online retailers, and was on the 2007 Inc. 500 list of America’s fastest-growing privately held companies.
