Ben invests in early-stage media entrepreneurs who are helping to build a more informed, inclusive, and empathetic society.
Previously, he was an open source startup founder, engineer, and web product strategist, driven by a belief that connecting people and letting them share their stories would help create a more peaceful world.
He co-founded Elgg, one of the first white-label social networking platforms, which was used by hundreds of universities, non-profits like Oxfam, Fortune 500 companies like Hill & Knowlton, startups like Minds.com, and the governments of at least three nations. He was also the CTO and first employee at Latakoo, which empowers video news delivery from the field for outlets like NBC News.
With Known, he built a social product that helped organizations bring social engagement back to their own websites, instead of yielding control to the likes of Facebook and Twitter. And he was also a Senior Engineer at Medium, working on tools that supported publishers like ThinkProgress and The Ringer.
At its best, the internet is a movement that transcends gatekeepers and creates new democratic opportunities. At its worst, we now know it can empower regressive movements, harm vulnerable communities, and sew distrust. In a world where the internet has found its way into every major industry and facet of our lives, building tools ethically is now a moral imperative. That’s what he wants to help people to do.
