Amsterdam, 15 November 2019 – Yesterday, Startupbootcamp’s first-ever Media focused accelerator, in close collaboration with RTL, Veronica Ventures and Moon ventures, celebrated its Demo Day, at De Balie in Amsterdam. Eleven promising international startups pitched their solutions impacting fast-transforming areas within the industry such as gaming, live-streaming, influencer marketing and on-demand video generation. Over 200 stakeholders from the Dutch media innovation ecosystem (mentors, corporates, influencers and investors) attended the event. The startups also announced game-changing collaborations with some of the major corporates in the Netherlands.
According to the CB Insights’ State of Innovation (2018) report, Media and Entertainment is the top industry at risk of disruption. Traditional media is increasingly being overtaken not only by Big Tech companies but also ‘Beyond Media’ companies. Lifestyle brands such as Redbull and Heineken, represent a new wave of businesses redefining the very definition of what a media company could be. Moreover, startups who work with the latest technologies on business models and user experiences of the future, further fuel the disruption that is pushing the industry beyond what it once used to be.
“For us at RTL, it is extremely important to maintain a close relationship with the startup community, because it challenges the status quo and shakes things up. 30 years ago, we started as a startup ourselves and with that, the Dutch media landscape was turned upside down. As a program partner, we have the chance to invest not only financially but also by putting in time and skills of our people to help today’s startups grow. At the same time the participants of Startupbootcamp bring innovation closer to us and share ideas that are solving the most pressing problems that persist within the industry. We are looking into implementing some of these insights.- Sven Sauvé, CEO at RTL.
Thus, aptly so, ‘Beyond’ was the theme of the Startupbootcamp’s 2019 Media Accelerator Demo Day which was a special moment for the eleven teams, who were selected out of a pool of nearly 400 startups who applied for the program. On November 14th, they took to the stage at De Balie and shared their key achievements during their 100-day acceleration journey.
Being a strongly mentor-driven accelerator, mentors play an integral part in the development of the startups in every Startupbootcamp program. This batch, in particular, was mentored by a network of top executives, investors and partners coming from Moon Ventures, RTL, Veronica Ventures, PepsiCo, Talpa Network and Amazon Web Services.
The milestones reached by the startups included partnerships with major players in the Dutch media ecosystem such as the European Broadcasting Union, Fox Sports, RTL and NPO. Some teams secured cross-industry collaborations with companies such as Aon.
“It’s a fact that startups are redefining the limits and expanding the possibilities in the Media industry. With this accelerator program, we wanted to nurture the Dutch media innovation ecosystem, by harnessing the innovative solutions of startups. Three months in, I’m immensely proud of this cohort. The growth that they have achieved in such a short period of time and in such a pressure-cooker environment is a true testimony to their commitment and remarkable potential.” – Bas Rogaar, Managing Director, Startupbootcamp Media Accelerator 2019.
According to the teams, this 2019 program gave them a unique chance to collaborate with leading corporates in their industry, validate their business models and connect with relevant investors.
“We applied to the accelerator program to get three things. We wanted to scale our business model, connect with new clients, and last but not least, learn. After three months we can say that we achieved this, thanks to the support and guidance from Startupbootcamp. Also, not only did we have such an international cohort, we met mentors, media experts and other professionals from all across the globe. It was very much, a larger than life experience!” – Tomas Vyskocil, Founder, Filmtoro
Post Demo Day, the journey for these startups continues. They will be integrated into the Startupbootcamp Global Alumni growth program, which connects over 800 startups worldwide.
