10 Cities Lead The Global Foodtech Startup Ecosystem. We Will be Visiting Them All.

31-May-2016 by Peter Kruger

Here at our offices in Rome, our team has been working hard to figure out which are the hottest cities in the world for foodtech startups. We have been scanning the globe up and down crunching all kinds of data: number of foodtech startups originated, number of deals generated, overall capital invested in foodtech startups, local support by ecosystem players such as incubators, accelerators, business angels, funds and governmental organizations.

In our effort, we have come up with a list of 10 ten cities which we are now announcing as the 2016 top 10 foodtech startup ecosystems in the world: London, Berlin, Rome, Bangalore, Silicon Valley, New York, Amsterdam, Paris, Istanbul, and Milan.

This is not just mere data for us. In fact, the list has deep operational implications for our accelerator. It helps us drive our scouting activities. It also enables us to know which ecosystems we must interact most with. As a prove of this, today we are also announcing our FastTrack World Tour. Between June and September, we will be visiting each of the top 10 cities and engaging with their foodtech ecosystems in 10 highly targeted FastTrack events.

This world tour is supported globally by Cisco and by key partners at each city. Here is the full schedule:

So what is a FastTrack? It is an integral part of the Startupbootcamp format, which is put in action by each of its 14 accelerators across the globe. Each FastTrack is a highly targeted one-day event whose main aim is to provide highly qualified feedback to a very selected number of startups from each ecosystem. Its main goal is to deliver “real” value to the selected teams, including connections to investors and business partners. Each FastTrack is also an opportunity for local startups and investors to meet with our management and get information on our program.

How does it work? Startups participating must go through a small application process. Ten are selected and divided into 2 batches: 5 in the morning and 5 in the afternoon. Each session has a very fast pitch session followed by 5 very intense 20-30min speed dates with sets of super-qualified mentors.

The most successful startups participating in each FastTrack event have also the potential to be selected for the 3 months Startupbootcamp FoodTech accelerator program. More on this here:
