Amsterdam, 29 January, 2013 – Startupbootcamp Amsterdam has created massive interest from startups in 40 countries world-wide, receiving almost 500 applications in total for the second instalment of the accelerator program.
Through “Open Pitch Days” and other events, startups took the opportunity to pitch their idea to get one of the exclusive spots in Startupbootcamp Amsterdam 2013. The applications are now closed and the selection process for the 10 best startups to participate is currently in full swing. As a final step the top startups will be invited to Amsterdam for the Final Selection Days on 26 and 27 February, when they will present their startup and team to a group of 100 mentors in the program.
Applications have been received from countries around the world including Germany, France, Argentina, Brazil, Italy, Spain, India, Russia, Chile, and Greece as well as Pakistan, Syria and Nigeria. Overall, Dutch startups are well represented with 22% of the applications followed by Great Britain with 17% and the USA with 12%. Other well-represented countries include India, Russia and Spain. The majority of the startups have already passed the initial phase of their development, with 32% being even closer to production and 17% still in the early phase with just a core idea and team.
The applications also showed that social networking is still a very popular market to develop and create new businesses, with 20% of the startups targeting that market. Other popular industries are e-commerce, travel-leisure-transport, games-music-online entertainment and advertising & marketing. Besides these popular markets startups also seem to increasingly find their ways in other industries such as health, self-learning, self-creation and online finance industries.
Patrick de Zeeuw, co-founder and CEO of Startupbootcamp Amsterdam is particularly enthusiastic about the high quality of the startups that have applied: “The success of the last programme surpassed all expectations, but this also meant that we had to raise the bar for the upcoming year. The applications that we’ve seen so far give us the confidence that we are poised to exceed expectations once again.”
The top 10 startups which will be finally chosen on 26 and 27 February will enter the 3-month accelerator programme starting on 2 April working towards the grand finale during Investor Demo Day on 28 June. Also for the second edition, the main stakeholders of Startupbootcamp Amsterdam; Vodafone, ABN Amro, Boer & Croon, VMW Taxand, Samsung, AxiCom, PwC and Microsoft will offer their support and expertise to make the second edition of Startupbootcamp Amsterdam a success.
