The announcement of the pairing up of two German industrial giants to fund a new program in Berlin is proof that it is no longer confined to tech companies.

We’ve seen a lot lately of car companies sidling up the technology world and vice versa. Consider Ford’s Open Developer Program for instance. But today, three big companies get involved in startups, one of them being the huge Mercedes-Benz. It, along with industrial giant Bosch and insurance company HDI, are partnering with tech accelerator Startupbootcamp in Berlin to create a new kind of accelerator vehicle called SBC2go.

The startup tour, which lasted approximately four hours, began at Startupbootcamp, a European accelerator program. Wowereit and the entourage of media also made stops at rebuy, a marketplace for used items, and sofatutor, an online tutoring platform. The tour wrapped up at the Wooga office where he spoke about the successes of startups and its impact on the Berlin economy.

Cloud software company Skynet Labs – which focuses on the global oil and gas exploration sector – has secured €750,000 in its first seed round. The investment includes some €500,000 from SOSventures and further funding of €250,000 from Enterprise Ireland.

Danish company “The Eye Tribe” (originally “Senseye”) has placed themselves at the cutting edge of eye tracking software. The startup originated at a Startup Weekend Mobile event held last year in Copenhagen. The team aims to make mobile technology more fluid and easy by incorporating the natural functions of our eyes.

The Pioneers Festival kicked off in Vienna this week and by the looks of the 2,300 attendees at the amazing Hofburg Imperial palace, the conference is shaping up to be a stand-out event in Europe, not least because it is enormously upbeat and positive. Something we need more of in Europe.

Our Grand Prize winner was The Eye Tribe! -a Copenhagen-based startup that allows users to control screens with their eyes. In total they won over €36 000 in cash and donated prizes. The team had to run off to catch a flight home immediately after receiving the award, but hopefully they were able to get the donated bottle of 1974 Dom Perignon Champagne on the plane.

Last week on Oct. 5th, IBM held its London SmartCamp Kickstart event where 5 innovative startups competed. After inspiring keynote addresses, mentoring sessions, and networking opportunities, the finalists presented their cases and tried to deliver winning pitches. Finalist Viewsy was named winner.

GetBulb, the startup that allows media organisations to rapidly produce data visualisations for high resolution print, and for interactive online graphics, has been named Winner of The Irish Times Digital Challenge. It won the €50,000 convertible loan note from DFJ Esprit at the Grand Finale event last Friday at The Workman’s Club, on Dublin’s Wellington Quay. Another Irish startup, Clevermiles says its dongle – which can be fitted to any car manufactured this century – has several purposes. The dongle transmits driving data back to a user – allowing them to analyse their behaviour for fuel efficiency. Parents could also fit it to their kids’ cars for a bit of extra peace of mind when they’re learning how to drive for the first time. There’s a social aspect too – users can upload their data to the web and compare it against others to figure out who is the best driver in the world.

The company was founded over lunch by its CEO Phuong Do and it’s technical director Martin van Spanje. LayerGlosss offers a full-service product for professionals and a DIY toolkit for individuals or small businesses. Both platforms enables users with limited technical knowledge to produce digital publications or apps.

The Eye Tribe (formerly known as Senseye) is a very cool company that is developing technology to allow you to control your phone or tablet with your eyes. While that concept sounds like something from a sci-fi movie, the Danish startup’s aim to release an eye tracking device to market has received a sizeable boost as it closed $800,000 in seed funding from a number of European investors.

BalconyTV—Music With A View announced today its first institutional funding from Polaris Venture Partners, Lerer Ventures and Greycroft Partners. Former MTV Networks CEO Judy McGrath will also join the global online music video channel in an advisory role. BalconyTV was founded by three Dublin friends who began filming daily performances of new and up-and-coming artists from their apartment balcony.

Startupbootcamp Copenhagen 2011 graduate, Archify just announced investment funding from Balderton Capital. They were just featured on TechCrunch‘s recent article: Balderton Capital Invests In Web Backup Startup Archify. Archify, which was founded in Vienna and is moving its headquarters to Berlin, just announced that it has raised a seed round of undisclosed size from Balderton Capital.

Over the weekend, startup accelerator TechStars announced a partnership with Startupbootcamp, a Copenhagen-based incubator and the very first member of a new global affiliate program hosted by TechStars.
Startupbootcamp is the global accelerator for startups with a mentor and alumni network from more than 30 countries across the world. Startupbootcamp runs accelerator programs in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Dublin, Eindhoven and Haifa. Each program selects 10 startups from 500 global applicants. Startups receive €15,000 in pre-seed investment, free co-working space and over €300,000 worth of deals from our sponsors and partners. The secret sauce to Startupbootcamp is the pool of volunteer mentors who help our startups by opening doors to customers, partners and investors. In addition we Startupbootcamp has partners with some of the leading brands in the world including Vodafone, IBM, Samsung and Novartis who act as mentors and pilot customers.
After the first 3 months of the accelerator program all teams are given the chance to pitch their company to hundreds of Business Angels and Venture Capitalists at Investor Demo Days. In addition Startupbootcamp teams are taken on an annual investor tour to London and Silicon Valley. After the program all startups are invited to join the Alumni Growth Program where they are helped to secure their next round of investment and grow the customer base.
85% of the Startupbootcamp alumni teams are still alive and 70% have gone on to raise additional funding from some of the worlds leading VCs and angels.
