In this issue Patrick de Zeeuw explains why he thinks that “brilliant ideas often seem worthless”.

Short English summary:

Around 70% of startups started with an idea which is significantly different from the end-product which brought about their success. Take for instance Flickr (started as a social gaming company), Groupon (started as an activist site) or YouTube (stated as a video dating site). Also at Startupbootcamp such “pivoting” is clearly visible. One of the startup teams – Viewsy – had the chance to pitch their product to two very renowned Dutch (operating internationally) companies. The pitch was strong but the reaction even stronger: “This is the Holy Grail for our company”, exclaimed one of the board members. “When can we start?”, asked another. Patrick’s motto is that you can never start early enough when it comes to talking with the market. You might surprise yourself how many people are willing to give you “free advice” about development of your product within the market.
“Go outside, get in touch with experts and clients before you fully design your product or service”, concludes Patrick.

Eoghan Jennings, MD, Startupbootcamp Dublin (left), Martin Kelly, IBM Venture Capital Group, Partner (Right)

How to Dance with Elephants

This is a good way for any startup to think about working with a large corporate. IBM for example has 415,000 employees spanning all major markets and industries. How can an entrepreneur engage in a meaningful way and avoid wasting precious time? Our team helps startups navigate big blue and helps IBM harness the energy of entrepreneurs. For the last 6 years I have been working with start-ups trying to understand how to do this better.

Changes to the VC Industry

IBM Venture Capital was established 12 years ago. We are investors in many of the leading VC firms around the world. We also have good relations with the top VC firms around the world even those we are not direct investors in. The model has served us well. Over the last couple of years however we started to notice some major changes in the VC industry. The costs of building a software business dropped dramatically. At the same time a number of new players including super angels, micro VC firms and accelerators entered the scene. It was now possible to prove a business model on very low amount of capital. Money were we told was not the scarce resource. The biggest challenge for many of the entrepreneurs was access to experienced mentors who had the battle scares of building a great company. The more we talked with entrepreneurs the more we validated that we could support them by connecting them with investors and experienced mentors. In response to these changes we launched a pilot program called SmartCamp in Dublin in Oct 2009.

SmartCamp and Startupbootcamp in Dublin

It is hard to believe that in just over two years SmartCamp has expanded from a pilot in Dublin to a global program. Our hope was to help start-ups bring their new businesses to the international marketplace, and with the support of our partners, companies have received significant press in Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and Bloomberg, and raised over $50M in venture capital, with many going on to work closely with IBM and expand their businesses. In addition, the program is now live in 15 countries and we are very proud of the network of over 400 experienced mentors who give up their time to work with these companies.

Startupbootcamp has been our key partner across Europe. They are unique in that the founders, Alex, Carsten, Eoghan, Patrick and Ruud have all experienced the highs and lows of a start-up. They have been there themselves – not just as investors but actually in the hot seat. And although they are all Europeans have global ambitions to support a new bred of entrepreneurs. We are delighted that Dublin is now one of the key locations for Startupbootcamp.

The Finale: Investor Demo Day

Today is the end of almost two years work. This journey to attract the best international start-ups to Dublin started in the nuclear winter of 2010. At the time, media coverage of the economic outlook was bleak and both the Irish and International press papers talked about mass migration like the 1980′s. This was 6 months before the IMF came to Dublin to negotiate a bailout.

A group from the investment community, together with entrepreneurs and public servants met to figure out what practical things could be done by our group to turn the tide. One person stood up and took up the challenge of making words a reality. That person was Eoghan Jennings who had recently returned to Ireland from Germany. This is a community effort for sure but it needed one person to bring it together. The Factory located in Barrow St is now a magnet for the entire Dublin startup scene.

Today amazing teams from Brazil, China, US, Poland, Romania, and Lithuania will join with some of our best local talent. They will meet investors from US, UK, Brazil, Switzerland, Holland, Germany, Turkey and beyond. In addition to the international dimension, I’m really excited to find start-ups who are solving real problems. Every team you’ll see addresses big markets and major challenges including car safety, food tracability, healthcare and travel in China to name a few. The types of problems that our customers are interested in. This is the reason we signed on as a sponsor.

This accelerator is unique in focusing beyond pure consumer internet and getting real engagement with the local multinational community. We are totally dependent on the support of our partners. We realize that for the planet to become smarter we need a global network of ecosystems of entrepreneurs and investors – all focused on the same prize of making the world work better.

Thank you Startupbootcamp.

[ Added Note: Yesterday evening, Martin was awarded 'Personality of the Year' for his work in the startup and venture capital groups by IBM's Global Corporate Venturing and will be present at tomorrow's event, Startupbootcamp Dublin's Investor Demo Day. ]
